How Did We Get Here? – The Evolution of Slot Games

Since we're in the know about slot games, we thought we'd take a few moments to help you learn a little more about them, where they started, and how they have evolved over the years. To see the genesis of machines that resemble the slot machines that so many of us know and love today, we need to go right back in time to 1887.

This is when a machine known as 'Liberty Bell' was created by a man called Charles August Fey. He made a machine that used playing cards as the three symbols. Payouts at that time were not automatic. Instead, people had to go to the bar of whatever saloon they were playing in to retrieve their winnings. Fey split the winnings from his Liberty Bell machine with the owner of the bars in which it was placed. Players would normally win a free drink or meal from the establishment.

In 1891, this basic idea had an upgrade, with a larger Poker Machine. This is where the evolution of the modern slot machine really took off. Unlike the rustic Liberty Bell, this machine used five reels with playing card symbols on them. But again, players still had to go retrieve winnings at the bar. The automatic pay-out system had not yet been invented. Still, this upgraded machine became extremely popular, and was to become a staple of any wild-west saloon. These saloons were well known for gambling, and many popular gambling games took off during this American frontier period.

It was not until 1908 that the first automated pay-out mechanism arrived. The Operator Bell machine created by Herbert Mills had an optional payout machine attachment that gave out fruit bubblegum – which is why the game had fruit symbols, and why such machines often became known as 'fruit machines'. Food based payouts were developed as a way to get around the gambling legislation in the United States.

Over the years, the slot machine industry grew and continued to evolve. Eventually, video slots arrived. The first of these was Fortune Coin's slot machine of 1976. The new television style screen was the height of modernity at the time.

Another major shift in the industry came in 1996, when Microgaming developed software to set up the industry's first online casino. Of course, this online casino was a huge success, and virtual customers began to flock in. Online gambling quickly took off, and became far more popular than heading down to a real-life casino. Physical casinos were hit hard and over the next few years, many of them closed their doors.

In 2004, Microgaming developed the industries first mobile casino software. This, of course, made it possible for people to enjoy an online gaming experience wherever they went. Today, mobile options have become the norm, and now almost all online casinos can be enjoyed on mobile platforms. On this site, you will discover that you can play online casino games whether you are doing it from a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone. You can play any time and anywhere at all all.  All you need is enough battery life and an internet connection.

What Do I Need To Know About Slot Games?

Slot games are never something that requires too much work or effort to understand. But we are of the opinion that it helps to do a little groundwork and research before you start actually playing these games for the first time, so you can hit the ground running. All slot games are pretty straightforward. But there are a few things you should know before you begin, including some very basic terminology that will help you understand what's going on.

What is the Random Number Generator (RNG)?

The  RNG is a clever piece of software that powers slot games behind the scenes. It is designed to ensure that there are completely unpredictable outcomes that are completely fair and completely random, and don't give anyone an unfair advantage in the games. This is essential to make sure that a game is fair, and that there is a true element of risk and randomness in each play.

With a typical slot game, there may be five reels and 3 rows. The possible combinations of symbols can reach into the billions. RNG software makes sure that all those potential combinations have exactly the same chance of appearing on every single spin.

    What are Reels and Rows?

This might seem very obvious to those who already know about slot games. But if you are new to them, you need to know that the reels are the vertical lines of symbols that spin around. And rows are the horizontal lines across the screen.

Most commonly, slot games will have between 4 and 5 reels, and 3 and 4 rows. They will work just the same as an old fashioned video slots or fruit machine in a local pub.

    • What is a Pay Line/ Bet Line?

A pay line, also known as a bet line, is a pattern that is drawn across the reels and rows on the screen. If a combination of symbols land on one or more of these lines then that will count as a win. The amount that you will win from a combination of symbols coinciding with a pay line will depend on the symbols and combinations which appear, and the winning requirements for the game in question.

Traditionally, pay lines were commonly straight lines in the vertical or horizontal. But they can also be diagonal, or even in weird zigzag shapes depending on the quirks in gameplay of the game in question.

Fixed pay lines are common. But some slot games may feature flexible pay lines. The player is sometimes able to choose which pay lines are activated during each play. The more pay lines are activated, the higher the bet per spin that must be payed.

What are Spinning Reels/ Rolling Reels/ Cascading Reels?

Game developers are always looking for new ways to liven things up and ramp up gameplay. That means that they have now often moved beyond the traditional fixed reels of slot machine games. Reels can behave in a wide range of different ways to boost a players winnings and make things more interesting. Spinning, rolling or cascading reels allow the chance for extra wins on a spin. Symbols disappear, allowing more to drop down and replace them, so a single spin can just be kept going to potentially get bigger winnings.

    What does Coin Value Mean?

Coin value is the term used to refer to the amount you are betting on each spin. This is represented in the slot game as a coin. Players can vary the amount that they wish to bet from spin to spin, and most games have a wide range between the minimum and maximum bet amount that they will allow.

    What is a Paytable?

In the info tab on any video slot, you will see the paytable. This is where players can get information and learn how to switch on certain features in the game that will allow for increased potential winnings. The paytable will show the value and features of the game.

What does 243 Ways to Win Mean?

Found in several slot games, such as Aloha! Cluster Pays. The concept means that payouts are not generated because of fixed paylines. Instead of having paylines, the game will pay out if 3 or more symbols land anywhere adjacent to one another.

What does Win Both Ways Mean?

Win both ways just means that you can win going from left to right and right to left.Unless this is specified, it is important to note that a slot will only pay out if the correct symbols or whatever are displayed from left to right.

    What does Megaways Mean?

Megaways is a new slot game approach that was developed by Big Time Gaming. It has become very popular in modern slot games. Effectively, what this software means is that every spin brings a random number of ways to win – sometimes up to an enormous 117,649 ways.

    What does Volatility Mean?

Volatility is a metric that highlights how often a slot game is going to pay. It won't tell you the precise number of bets that you would have to place to win. But it can give you a broad idea of what to expect from the gameplay of a particular slot.

What does Return to Player Mean?

The return to player of a particular slot game is the percentage that a slot will pay out in relation to what it will keep. It is important to note that the online casino will usually keep a certain percentage – which highlights the edge that a casino has over its players. Most recent slot games have a return to player percentage of 95% or more. But it is a good idea to keep an eye on this so you don't get caught out.

    What are Bonus Rounds?

Most slot games that have been developed after the turn of the century will have additional features in addition to the base game. After all, they want to keep people interested and coming back for more. Bonus rounds are common – and in some, are the only way to get big rewards. This is the case on Rainbow Riches, for example.

    What are Free Spins?

The most common bonus round offered today is free spins. This means that you will get the change for additional chances to win, without adding any additional money to your account.

How Can I To Choose a Slot Game To Play?

There are a wide range of different things to consider when it comes to choosing a slot game to play. One thing to bear in mind is that many now offer the chance to play for free – so you can try them out, experience the game play and get to know them a little before you commit to actually taking a spin.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there is no one-size-fits-all slot out there. One person's favourite might not appeal to someone else at all. So it is important to think about your personal preferences before you decide which one to play.

    Think about:

    • Whether you want high volatility with bigger payouts, or something a little more secure.
    • If you want something simple, or something more complex and elaborate.
    • What your budget is (and how much you can afford to spend per spin).
    • Your preferences as to symbols, theme, paylines etc..

Thinking about what you want before you start, and getting to know the features of a particular game will save you a lot of hassle once you get started.
